During my drive to work, a bird tried to swoop down across the road. My car occupied its flight path in the next instant, and it smacked into the rear passenger window on the driver side. Thump . I knew the bugger was dead. This morning, on my drive home, I confirmed it — the bird was still on the road, by the yellow stripes. Deader than a rock. (And surprisingly, not roadkill’d into a pancake.)

The first bird kill, though? Poor sucker tried to dodge my car during my drive home after our Whidbey Island Oppo Cruise in ‘18. It glanced off the top of the windshield and roof, and careened into the ether.

I should probably get kill mark decals for the rear window — make it subtle, maybe feathers?

As a side thought, this is probably why the car keeps getting bird poop on it. It’s probably killed countless little birds during police service...

if you’re putting decals on your car for that then I need two on my motorcycle helmet. Good thing visors are stronger than sparrows.

Better than putting two motorcycle helmet decals on your car I guess.

Were supposed to keep track of these? If that’s the case the Mini has gotten a possum looking thing, 2 rabbits, 1 bird, 1 turtle (Thompson speedway has a turtle problem) and probably 2 or 3 dozen squirrels (squirrels were a serious problem here in VT and NH last fall, the highways were lit erally carpeted in squirrel carcases to the point it was a pretty big news story). It’s also decapitated a cone at an autocross.

I never knew these were bird killers... The only car I’ve ever driven that killed birds was a 2nd gen Kia Sportage. I originally dubbed it “the gutless wonder”, then added, “killer of birds” after the second dead bird. Over the course of a single 3-day trip in this car a bird died on the windshield the first day (leaving blood and feathers in the upper center of the windshield ), then another died on the bumper the third day leaving more blood as well as some feathers in the lower grille .

Any clue why the CV likes to kill them? Is this a known feature?

No idea. It's just pure chance.
